Ornithopters were designed to fly by flapping their wings like birds using human power, an idea as old as time. James W. Clark, clock maker, bicycle repairman and inventor, of Bridgewater, Pennsylvania. He supposedly tested this machine between 1900 and 1910.
The relation in size of humans and their output power and requied power for flight has not been proven. Clarks ornithopter failed to fly, was wrecked, then rebuilt and fitted with the present engine in 1910. Specifications: engine 5 hp. Waterman Motor Company, two-cylinder vertical, water-cooled.
